Toro Award for Most Improved Course of 2018

Four venues have been honoured with top accolades at an awards ceremony at the European Tour Destinations Annual Conference.

Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa, the host venue of the conference, Le Golf National, Terre Blanche Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort and London Golf Club all ran out winners at the three-day conference in Malaga, which was attended by over 20 venues.

The host venue was the biggest winner on the day, receiving two of the five awards on offer. In addition to receiving the 2018 award for Best Staff Engagement, the exclusive Spanish resort was also the proud recipient of the Best Staff Operation honour for the second year running.

Miguel Girbes, Director of Golf at Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa, said: “It was a great honour for Finca Cortesin to host this year’s European Tour Destinations’ conference, and to win two such coveted awards made the occasion extra special.

“The resort prides itself on offering all our members and guests an outstanding customer experience, whatever service they require,” he said.

“To be rated so highly again against a collection of the top resorts in Europe gives us enormous pleasure, and we will continue to do everything we can to make the service even better going forward.”

Le Golf National, host venue of The 2018 Ryder Cup, received the 2018 award for Best Course Presentation following its excellent condition for the biennial contest.

“Le Golf National and all of the staff here are delighted to bring home the trophy for best maintained course,” said Paul Armitage, General Manager of Le Golf National.

“It is the second year running that European Tour Destinations and our mystery customers have awarded this prize to us and it is all the more pleasing considering 2018 was a challenging year for us, as everyone will understand.

“Maintaining all three courses to the highest levels all year was a huge challenge and running two massive events – Open de France and, of course, The Ryder Cup – puts extra stress on the courses and the staff.

“I am very proud of the team who have proven their skills in all conditions once again. Look out for us again in 2020 and as the French saying goes ‘jamais deux sans trois!’ (good things come in threes!).”

Terre Blanche Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort, located in France, received the award for 2018’s Best Sales Process.

Jean-Marie Casella, Director of Golf at Terre Blanche, said: “We would like to express our gratitude to European Tour Destinations for this recognition, who are supporting us in our quest of excellence.

“We are greatly encouraged and we will continue our dedication to quality and will do everything possible to offer the best golf experience in Europe.”

London Golf Club – the first ever European Tour Destination – has impeccable tournament credentials, having held European Tour tournaments in the form of the 2008 and 2009 European Opens and most recently the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in 2018.

The Kent venue won Most Improved Course of 2018 and Stephen Follett, Chief Executive of London Golf Club, paid tribute to his staff after receiving the award.

“At the beginning of 2017 we embarked on a project with the support of European Golf Design to create a strategic plan for both courses to ensure that players would have the best possible experience when playing the Heritage or the International,” he said.

“The greenkeeping team, under the leadership of Lee Sayers, has been working extremely hard over the last two years, so the award for Most Improved Course is a fantastic recognition to Lee and his team for all their work and dedication.”

Iain McInally, Head of European Tour Destinations, said: “Congratulations to all venues who won awards at our Annual Conference.

“The results across all venues are industry leading within all categories and the teams from the four venues taking these Awards should feel very proud of their hard work and achievements.”
