Members and their guests raised the impressive total by playing in a Pro Am Day on the International Course last Wednesday. 22 teams took to the fairways for the event which saw the likes of Tour professionals Benn Barham, Steve Webster, Oliver Fisher, Ross McGowan and Billy Longmuir offering their time to play. Bill Dewsall’s GMI team and professional Steve Webster took top spot shooting 21 under par.
The fundraiser was the brainchild of London Golf Club Members, Graham Rowsewell and Chris Fishwick who wanted to give something back to the local community and felt Demelza was the perfect organisation to help. Chris Fishwick said: “The standard of golf and venue was first class. It was great to see so many members chipping in for such a worthy cause.”
The golf was followed by a charity auction which included lots such as a signed Pele football shirt, a round of golf with Thomas Bjorn and a Pro Am team in The European Open which is being played at The London Golf Club in July. The auction alone raised £27,500, which combined with the entry fees and other donations totalled £35,000.
London Golf Club Head Professional Paul Stuart, who oversaw the running of the day, said: “£35,000 is a fantastic amount of money and was far in excess of what we were hoping to raise. This amount will pay for a Special Care Nurse’s salary for one year which really makes it worthwhile.”
Local Kent professional Benn Barham, who is heavily involved with Demelza House and assisted with the organising of the London Golf Club event said: “It’s fantastic that we raised so much money. It exceeded all my expectations and shows how highly Demelza House is regarded. Everyone who played was so supportive and so generous and I’m really looking forward to next year’s event which I hope will prove to be even more of a success.”
Demelza House Fundraising Manager Laura Carey said: “The London Golf Club did a wonderful job organising the Charity Pro Am. A brilliant day and evening was had by all and on behalf of Demelza I would like to thank everyone who attended. Not only did they raise a fantastic amount, but they really helped create more awareness of the charity. We have to raise £3.5 million a year and with little government funding we rely on clubs like The London Golf Club to keep our services running.” For more information, please contact Abigail Nance at The London Golf Club at abigail@londongolf.co.uk or on 01474 875 724
