Top Players test out London Golf Club prior to European Open

Darren Clarke is among a number of top Tour players who have already come to play The Heritage in preparation for July’s European Open.

The Ryder Cup player visited The London Golf Club the week following the announcement to test out the course.  And he wasn’t alone.  Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko accompanied him for a round.

Darren was very complimentary about the Club which will host the 31st European Open from 3rd to 6th July.  During his game he commented that The Heritage was a really great course and should prove a good test of golf for all the tour players.  “It’s in great condition and doesn’t really need to be lengthened all that much for The European Open.  The greens may seem flat but they’re pretty undulating and could prove quite tricky.  I’ll be very surprised if the winning score is more than -18.”

Fellow Ryder Cup player David Howell also came to the Club on the same day and had similar favourable comments about the new venue for the jewel in the European Tour’s crown.  A steady flow of similar golfing greats is expected to come to The London Golf Club to practice in the lead up to the event.

One player who is definitely confirmed to play in July is eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie who will be defending the title. “It’s great that we have a London venue on the Schedule. Having played at The London Golf Club quite recently, I know that it will unquestionably provide a stern examination for my Tour colleagues and I”.

The European Open was first held in 1978 when American Bobby Wadkins won the title at Walton Heath in Surrey.  Since then, eight Major Champions have captured the prestigious titles, namely Michael Campbell, Nick Faldo, Retief Goosen, Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam.

London Golf Club Member and former Ryder Cup player Paul Way also took the title back in 1987:  “It was a fantastic win for me.  I shot 9 under par and beat Bernard Langer and Greg Norman.”  Paul hasn’t played in the tournament for a few years, but now it’s coming to the London Golf Club he’s put it in the diary: “It’s a great tournament course and with the new tees it’s even longer which will suit the players.”

Kent Pro Ben Barham is equally looking forward to the event.  “It’s great for me as I know and love the course, but it’s also great for the county as it’s a massive competition right on our doorstep.   The Club is perfect for it as well - in my view it’s one of the UK’s premier golfing venues.”

The DGM Barbados Open

A birdie blitz on the back nine helped London Golf Club’s Bill Longmuir to a comfortable victory at the DGM Barbados Open on the European Seniors Tour.

Some scintillating golf on the back nine helped the Scot, who was six shots off the lead after the first day, blow away a high class field – including Ian Woosnam – to register his first victory since last August.

Despite wet and windy conditions at Royal Westmoreland, Billy made no fewer than seven birdies - including five in a row from the 13th hole – in a flawless round of golf.

His aggregate score of ten under par was enough to see off the English challenge of Bob Cameron and Nick Job, who finished three and four shots behind respectively.

Joint overnight leader Delroy Cambridge of Jamaica was a further shot back, whilst Woosnam – who owns a home and has a catamaran moored on the Caribbean island – finished his maiden Seniors Tour event on four under par, after a final round of 71.

The Welshman was one of the first to congratulate Billy, who automatically shot to the top of the Order of Merit with his victory – the seventh of his Seniors Tour career.

The London Golf Club member said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to win again – you don’t get many days like this, where nearly everything goes right. There were a few jitters towards the end, but I managed to keep my nerves under control for the most part.  The long putt for birdie on 17 was crucial – once that went in, I knew I had the tournament in the bag. My putter hasn’t always been my best friend lately, but today it was.  My putting really let me down on the first day, which meant I finished a long way back and had a bit of a mountain to climb. But I still played fairly solidly from tee to green, so I knew I had it in me”

Spikes or Skates?  New Club President makes the cut!

Olympian and now ice-skating star Steve Backley OBE has accepted the role of London Golf Club Honorary President.  The Kentish sports star, who plays off an impressive 6 handicap, loves his golf and is dedicated to the game.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be asked to be the president of what I consider to be the best golf club in the South East.  The Heritage is one of the only courses that I’ve played that makes you want to get straight back out there to try to beat it!  Back in 2006, I played in The British Olympic Association Event at the club and shot 74, 75 and won!  That was as good as I can play and I loved every minute of it!“ said Steve.

Some would say the three-time Olympic medal winner has been on thin ice since swapping his spikes for skates to take part in ITV’s “Dancing on Ice”, but he’s firmly grounded when it comes to his golf. Famous for his distance with a javelin and now for his routines in the rink, Steve’s a big hitter out on the course, although his busy work schedule means he hasn’t played a round since October!

Despite his many other commitments, he’s eager to get back in the swing of things and looks forward to taking up the position of London Golf Club Honorary President.

Branded the “housewives’ favourite” thanks to the skating show, Steve has been a regular player at the Club for the past year.  In that time, the 6ft5 former athlete has committed to a number of club and charity events, plus he’s held several motivational seminars, using the Club’s meeting rooms.

“I call the Club my sanctuary.  I can chill out there and escape.  From the moment you drive through the gates you know that you’re in a special place. The Clubhouse is so welcoming and friendly that you instantly feel relaxed.  The catering there is first class too!” added Steve.

General Manager Heath Harvey is delighted that such a high-profile sportsman will represent the Club for what’s set to be an exciting and decisive year:   “An Olympian and a single figure golfer, what more appropriate ambassador for The London Golf Club than Steve Backley, OBE?  Steve has endeared himself to a large element of our membership and this has made our decision to ask him to fulfil the role of Honorary Club President all the easier.

“Like much of Kent, we relish the opportunities that the next four years hold with the development of the Olympic Village on our doorstep.  The London Golf Club has for the past three years supported the British Olympic Association by hosting their annual golf day.  With Steve as our Club President, we look forward to continuing and strengthening this relationship.”

Link your game together

Here at The London Golf Club we want to ensure that you always have the best round possible.  Naturally that tends to be when you shoot your lowest score so with that in mind we’ve invested in the very latest rangefinder technology.

QuickShot has been designed by golfers for golfers with the goal of providing the simplest and fastest way to find distance to the flagstick.  The handheld device gives pinpoint accuracy from 30 to 370 yards so you can select the right club and hopefully knock shots off your scorecard!

Fifty new buggies finished in The London Golf Club branding colours will be joining them soon.  Plus there will be two additional orange carts for the Course Marshals so you’ll see them coming….!

Perhaps most importantly…a new drinks buggy will soon be servicing the fairways.  Not only will it be an updated model but it will be better stocked as well...

Changing rooms at LGC

For two years on the trot The London Golf Club has won Clubhouse of the Year.  To make it a hat trick we can’t sit back on our laurels.  So instead we are continuing our extensive renovation programme with fervour and undertaking a locker room refit.

The intention is to create the finest golf club changing rooms in the UK.  The configuration will be divided into Visitors, Members and Executive areas with contemporary shower cubicles, new sauna and vanity units.

The facilities will be finished in the highest quality materials and fabrics – walnut and glass – with Bang & Olufsen audio systems and Molton Brown shower products.  The building work begins in the autumn….

A step in the right direction!

No, this isn’t a search for the Imelda Marcos of the golf world!    Rather confirmation that more than two hundred pairs of old and unclaimed golf shoes from The London Golf Club are winging their way to new homes in Africa as part of a charitable initiative.

The staggering number of spikes accumulated over the years in the Club’s lost property.  Caddy Master Norman Pilcher worked tirelessly mailing them back to forgetful players who’d visited the courses, but despite a publicity drive to find their owners, hundred weren’t collected.

After more than a year in storage, Norman was keen to find a worthy cause to donate them to, so contacted the Royal & Ancient who recommended the Africa programme.  Five boxes of spikes have been packed up and sent to the Golf Union of Zambia for distribution to clubs over there….

Bendinat bulletin

In the last few months, despite being winter in Mallorca, The Bendinat Group have sold the final apartments in one of their prime developments.  Sa Vinya, which has views over The London Golf Club’s sister course, Real Golf de Bendinat, is now all under ownership.

The Group has also just expanded one of its most recent projects thanks to the acquisition of an additional plot of land.  Portocolom, in the west of the island, was originally going to be made up of 110 apartments and villas.  To satisfy increased demand, the development, which is by a picturesque fishing village, is now going up to 150 so even more opportunity to snap one up!

In between developing and selling their luxury properties, The Bendinat Group also does its bit for charity.  In February, a charity wine-tasting, attended by around 150 people, raised more than 4.000 euros for the Balearic Cystic Fibrosis Association.

For more information about The Group’s properties in Mallorca, please ask a member of The London Golf Club Marketing Team….

Course news

Naturally the Green Keeping staff’s main focus from now until July is preparing for The European Open.  The Heritage Course is always in impeccable condition thanks to Head Green Keeper Glenn Kirby and his crew, but they know more than most that that quality has to be surpassed to impress the top Tour professionals.

For sometime the team has been primarily working on bunker renovations.  It’s been an extensive programme on The Heritage because of the speculation over the tournament.

However, The International has also received its fair share of attention with a completely new bunker on the approach to the 4th hole which is now finished and already catching players out! By May this hole will also have a new and combined white/blue tee box.

You may have noticed that the woodchip pathways have been totally reconstructed between the 1st and 2nd and 14th and 15th holes on The International and between the 16th and 17th on The Heritage.  All have new surfacing and steeper edges.

And, in terms of planting, the Green Keepers have put in 8,000 gorse bushes and 1,400 trees with a view to improving aesthetics on both courses. …
